Musical Composition

I use Finale NotePad on classroom netbooks with students to understand that music has patterns and phrases that are the same and different. A variety of patterns occur in music and the world around us. Most musical compositions have a certain structure. The students first compose music using the notes of the C Major Scale and basic rhythmic note values, e.g., whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes and their corresponding rests to make an 8 measure composition. This is done so that they understand the theory behind note values and music fundamentals when writing music. I use this worksheet, C_Major_Composition.jpg

From this activity they realize the relationships that notes, rests, time signature form a role in composing music.

What Music Means To Me

The What Music Means to Me project's purpose is to show the benefits of music making and music learning and how we are affected or can be influenced by music. Using photographic images and personal statements, students were asked to 1) create a personal statement that answers the question: What Does Music Mean to Me? and/or How Does Music Make Me Feel?, and 2) to use an existing lyric from a song that they currently listen to that exemplifies their personal statement. The students then used a Flickr site: Compfight, that uses Creative Commons images and found 4 images without words that portrays their personal statement and the lyric. Students had to use EasyBib to correctly cite the images. The students received this worksheet. They then created "boxes" through the website Museum Box that allowed them to put a text and images into a box that described how music has influenced them or what music means to them. I gave each students these instructions.

By viewing and discussing in class these boxes I was able to see through images and personal statements of students how the power of music has affected their lives and will shape their future. The reason I have done this activity is to show students that even though they have many things that influences them, e.g., peers, family, media; they can show through a different art form how music affects them and the connections that music can have on them. Feel free to click on any of the examples below. After the box is loaded, you can click on it to see what images/text that the students did on the other sides of the cube.
